Exemestane is an aromatase inhibitor primarily used for the treatment of estrogen-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It reduces estrogen production, thereby inhibiting the growth of estrogen-dependent cancer cells. It is FDA-approved and is often used after tamoxifen treatment to prevent disease recurrence. Exemestane is also sometimes used as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to counteract the effects of estrogen. It was introduced in 1999 and has established itself as an effective cancer treatment.
