Memantine (brand name Namenda) is an NMDA
receptor antagonist used to manage moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. It
helps improve cognitive functions and daily activities, though it does not cure
the disease. Common side effects include dizziness, headache, confusion, and
constipation.
How It Works
In Alzheimer's disease, the brain produces
excess glutamate, which overstimulates NMDA receptors and causes nerve cell
damage. Memantine blocks these receptors to prevent excitotoxicity without interfering
with the normal transmission of nerve signals.
